  • Go Green Go! Green Race Cars
From: Medford Clubhouse, Boys and Girls Clubs of Middlesex County
    By: Jacquelyn Rudis
    7/30/2012
  • What we choose to do:

Our Go Green Go! Green Race Cars event showcased campers’ race cars made from recycled materials. It was also an opportunity for campers to teach peers and other attendees about green practices.

  • How we did it:

Through our Green Racers program, campers created green race cars using materials such as recycled shoeboxes and CDs. They painted their cars during our Green Art program, which uses recycled materials such as cardboard as a medium for art projects. During the event, campers raced these cars on a track which showcased scenery painted during Green Art. At the event, campers shared with the audience the importance of the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and introduced a fourth – Repair!

  • Who was involved:

The Green Racers program utilizes a curriculum focused on green engineering from Boston’s Museum of Science. Staff and campers from the Medford Boys and Girls Club were involved in planning and organizing the event, which was attended by various community members including Mayor Michael J. McGlynn, Board President Richard Fields, and Medford Energy Efficiency Coordinator Alicia Hunt.

  • How this can help:

This event was a great opportunity for our campers to share with the community what they have learned about going green. Using recycled materials in such an unexpected, innovative, and fun way like our Go Green Go! Green Race Cars event did is a great way to encourage peers and even adults to look for more opportunities to be creative with going green!
